Water makes up about 60% of our body weight. SIXY percent! That’s a lot. Every system in our body relies on water to function. Here’s a little snippet that I read from Mayo Clinic:
Water is your body’s principal chemical component and makes up about 60 percent of your body weight. Every system in your body depends on water. For example, water flushes toxins out of vital organs, carries nutrients to your cells and provides a moist environment for ear, nose and throat tissues.
Lack of water can lead to dehydration, a condition that occurs when you don’t have enough water in your body to carry out normal functions. Even mild dehydration can drain your energy and make you tired.
Most of us have probably heard to drink 8 glasses of water a day. That’s 8 – eight oz glasses. But did you know that that’s just shy of what we’re supposed to be drinking? It’s just easier to remember.
The Institute of Medicine determined that an adequate intake (AI) for men is roughly 3 liters (about 13 cups) of total beverages a day. The AI for women is 2.2 liters (about 9 cups) of total beverages a day.
Water and Weight Loss
But how does that correlate to weight loss? Water and Weight Loss. Did you realize that you could be sabotaging your weight loss if you’re not drinking enough water?
The process of burning calories requires an adequate supply of water in order to function efficiently; dehydration slows down the fat-burning process. via CaloriesPerHour
Let me tell you. I realize that every day! I struggle to get in the 8 – eight oz glasses of water a day let alone more than that. My body definitely lets me know if I don’t get enough. If I’m even just a little bit shy of my full water intake, my body retains. I will swell up like a balloon!
It’s frustrating! But I just need to really make sure I’m doing everything I can to get my water in. I’ve started making at least one quart of my sugar free tea per day and then drinking 1 more quart of regular water. That gives me 64 oz and then I try to drink a little extra on top of that.
I love making my own brew over ice tea!
What are your tips on getting in your water for the day?

I’m so excited to read this. I’m starting my own Medifast journey next week and I know I will struggle to drink the recommended water. I’ve started practicing and still haven’t done it! I know what is so good for you though!
Dawn says
Good luck, Stefanie! You’ll do great!

I have been working really hard on drinking more water. I think it’s a huge way to help losing weight.
Dawn says
Absolutely!

I drink water all day long! I love to add a splash of lemon or lime (or a lemon wedge) to my water. Yum!
Dawn says
Yes, lemon or lime is a great way to add a little taste.

I am horrible at drinking water…. I have to add some sort of flavoring to it as it is just too bland for me. Now that I am pregnant… I’ve been trying to make a conscious effort as I’ve ended up in the ER for being dehydrated already! 🙁
Dawn says
Oh goodness! You definitely need to stay hydrated. I had that once with my 2nd. Labor pains and all due to dehydration.
I like to add some sort of flavoring too.

I suck at drinking enough water. But I have learned that if I keep a gallon, in the fridge, I can easily see how much I have left to drink for the day. When I am leaving the house, I will will a travel cup with water from my gallon jug. It’s just easier for me, that way.
Dawn says
Yes! That’s a good idea. I try to do that too. Or I try to drink 2 quart size. I haven’t made it up to the gallon yet. 😀
