Healthy Habits for Mental Happiness

Do you have any healthy habits? I have one that helps me with my mental health. Especially over our really long, cold winter.

Anyone who lives in one of the northern ‘cold weather’ states can probably attest to just how long and brutal this last winter was. It’s now May and we still are seeing more cold days than warm.

Healthy Habits

I’ve always considered myself a pretty happy, upbeat person. I usually can see the glass half full and am generally a positive thinking person. However, over the winter I found myself withdrawing from my normal activities. I just didn’t feel like getting out and even less like being social.

I pulled back from participating in our Homeschool group and we stayed in the house more than we ventured out. I can’t say that I was truly depressed, but I was just blah. Do you have those blah days?

When the weather finally started getting a little nicer and winter looked to be over soon, I started perking up a bit. These warmer days, where the sun is shining down, are glorious. I take my computer and work outside so I can soak up as much sun as I can. I really feel like I am being powered by the sun. I get so much accomplished and just feel better overall. I know how much vitamin D can affect moods but I just did not realize how much until I was depleted.

Healthy Habits

A few years ago I was seeing an endocrine doctor for weight issues. I have always had trouble losing weight and if I did lose any, I had trouble keeping it off. Am I describing you here? I think a lot of us face these same issues.

Healthy Habits

Well I finally went to see my regular doctor and she said I was low on vitamin D. Really low. Vitamin D can play a role in weight loss. Who knew?! So not only can I attribute some weight loss issues to low Vitamin D but also my blah mood!

Healthy Habits

My doctor prescribed a high dose of Vitamin D and it replenished my stores. After several months, I was able to go down to an over the counter dose. Part of my Healthy Habits is making sure I take my daily dose of Vitamin D. I get all of my vitamins right from Walgreens. They always have great products for Women’s Health.

Healthy Habits

I seem to only put my health first when it’s absolutely necessary. We’re moms and we have our families to take care of. Which means that sometimes our own health gets a lower priority. We have to remember to take care of ourselves so we can continue to take care of them.

Thankfully, the sun is back out and is here to stay for at least the next few months or so. While I can still get my vitamin D from the sun, I still have to take my daily dose. I’m fair skinned and can not, nor should not go out in the sun for extended periods of time without being lathered up in sunscreen.

Taking my daily dose of vitamin D is one of my healthy habits. What are some of yours?

Great article! Pretty sure I’m vitamin D deficient, year-round. 😛

It’s not always easy to get that Vit D even when the sun is out. 🙂

It seems like the older I get, the more I realize I’ve got to take better care of myself. I’ve never been one to take vitamins, or heck….even eat breakfast in the mornings. Since the first of the year – I’ve tried really hard to make better choices and listen to my body more! Great post!

Thanks, Jenni! Yes, I know exactly what you mean. You’d think I’d be skinny with all the meals I forget to eat. HA!

I always seem to put myself last when it comes to my health. Living in Florida, it is easy to get outside more often, but it just seems that we’re too busy. I usually go to Walgreen’s for my vitamins, so I’ll definitely check out all they offer. Thanks for the great reminder!

When I was at Walgreens over the weekend, they have a nice B1G1 offer. Love the sales on vitamins. 🙂

A similar thing happened to my husband. He was feeling kind of low and dragging, so he had a blood test and found out he was also very low in vitamin D. After high doses for a time he perked up, too. It really is amazing what a difference these important vitamins do for us. We all need to be aware!

Isn’t it just crazy what that one vitamin can do? I think more people are low on vit D than we’d think.

I should definitely get some Vitamin D. I started doing yoga this spring and really enjoy that as my healthy habit.

I am probably lacking in Vitamin D too. We NEVER go outside. Or at least, we go out rarely. My husband works afternoons/evenings. By the time he leaves for work, it’s nap time for the kids and then when they wake up, it’s time to cook dinner. It’s just a never ending cycle of LAME. I am vitamin B12 deficient which also helps with metabolism. I recommend all women take that too! I should go pick up some Vitamin D to go with my B12 that I never take. 🙂 *HIGHFIVE* for taking better care of ourselves! #client
