At the age of 4, our youngest daughter was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease. You may have read about Faith’s Journey, on the blog. Crohn’s Disease is a chronic inflammatory disease of the intestines, especially the colon and ileum. Faith has been dealing with this for 6 years now. She’s been through a lot and it has not been an easy journey.
Our major focus has always been getting the symptoms under control so that Faith can be a ‘normal,’ healthy, happy little girl. For the past 3 years, we thought her disease was under control. The symptoms were gone and she didn’t have many issues. Of course, with the medicine regime she was taking, her immune system was compromised. She had the occasional cold but seemed to be able to recover ok. Until last fall.
When Faith gets sick, it happens quickly. Last October, she started running a fever and vomiting. We were actually on vacation so we arranged to fly home a day early so we could get her to the doctor. Blood tests showed that her inflammation markers were up and physical examination showed an ear infection.
Well how do you treat an ear infection? Antibiotics.
Those antibiotics, while clearing up her ear infection, did a number on her gut. Through it all out of whack and caused her Crohn’s to flair up. For the next couple months, Faith was sick. Diarrhea, fevers, vomiting. She was losing weight and when you’re small to begin with, any loss is too much.
Long story short, we were able to get her Crohn’s back under control but this is what she has been living with over the past 6 years. Her poor GI system is always under attack.
Now, your child doesn’t have to have Crohn’s Disease to have an upset GI system. There are a lot of things that can mess up our insides. We all have good and bad bacteria in our guts. We need that good bacteria. However, when the bad bacteria gets out of hand, that’s when we have a problem.
Over the years, I’ve tried different children’s probiotics. It’s not easy to get your child to take something they don’t like or if they can’t swallow pills. Faith is 10 and still isn’t able to swallow pills. None of my kids can, actually. That’s why I really like BioGaia ProTectics.
