I was provided an all expense trip to cover the Cars 3 Movie Premiere Event including Cars 3 cast interview. All opinions are my own. Find all #Cars3Event coverage on Blogging Mom of 4.
I have been fortunate to get to attend several Disney press events now and each one has been so incredible. I think as “mommy bloggers” become more mainstream, if you will, the interviews tend to just get better and better. And really, I think it’s partly because the talent feel comfortable with us. They tend to loosen up and have a ton of fun.
This interview was just that.. a TON of fun. There were so many laughs. The pictures that were captured during the interview, really show just how many laughs were shared.
What I kept thinking during the event was how great their camaraderie was together. These four people all voiced their characters separately. They are not together during the movie making process. They each are in a separate booth and separate times recording their parts. Yes, I’m sure they bond quite a bit during the press tours but still. Owen Wilson, Kerry Washington, Cristela Alonzo and Armie Hammer were so fun to interview together.
And look.. there’s my head, I’m laughing right along with them! 😉
Now, writing an interview with a group of people, can be a little bit harder than say one person or even two. Especially when there are a lot of laughs. So instead of giving you a recap of the interview as a whole, I want to share some of my favorite moments.
I was live tweeting during the Cars 3 cast interview as well. So you’ll be able to find full coverage on Blogging Mom of 4 Twitter channel. Although, it seems my tweets were a little light for this interview. I think I was laughing too hard through most of it. 😉
Cars 3 Cast Interview Favorite Moments
Owen Wilson
Owen was asked how he felt about the impact he has made with kids and especially the kids in the special needs community. He said, “It feels great. And I think that’s kind of the nice thing about doing something creative like we all do… make something that means something to people, or that they laugh and enjoy. That’s a great feeling.”
On a side note, after the Cars 3 World Premiere Red Carpet Event, the after party was held at Cars Land in Disney’s California Adventure park. We found out that Owen had actually never ridden the Radiator Springs Racers ride but he had planned to that night. And he did! We saw him getting off of the ride. I’m pretty sure he liked it as much as we all did!
Kerry Washington
One of my readers tweeted me this question for Kerry and I was able to ask her:
Kerry always says roles come into her life when she needs to learn something from them. Is that true for this role as well? #Cars3Event
— ?Meagan? (@tiptoe2thesun) June 10, 2017
Kerry said that this character, Natalie Certain, really made her think a lot about the disposable society that we live in. Her character is so sure of her winner predictions, because of the numbers and because the younger racers are hot and new that she discounts everybody else. And as a society she thinks we need to be really careful about this same type of mentality. Not just in business but in general.
She then told of a story she heard recently, “Rutgers University paid more money than they’d ever paid to any visiting adjunct speaker ever the year that Snooki came to teach. That’s not, there’s no judgment on that, but she’s a reality star and that was the same year that Maya Angelou spoke at their commencement. And it just made me realize that we can sometimes, I think, prioritize hot and new more than we prioritize wise and creative. And as a society, we need to be careful about that. Again, no judgment about her.”
Wow!! That was an amazing answer from Kerry Washington.
Cristela Alonzo
Cristela’s laugh is truly infectious. She is such a bright light. That is truly what stuck out to me the most about Cristela. But what I will always remember is when she told us about how her family always told her to dream small. Her family didn’t want her heart broken so they told her to dream small. They said that she couldn’t have big dreams “because big dreams don’t happen for people like us.”
Cristela told John Lasseter this story and Lasseter ran with it. There is a part in the movie where Cruz get’s upset at Lightning and one of the lines is dream small. That all came from Cristela’s upbringing.
My other favorite moment from Cristela is when she is talking about how she landed the part. Aparently, her agent asked her if she wanted to go to Pixar but didn’t tell her anything else. They flew her up to Pixar but she had no idea she was being considered for anything. Once she got there, they had her sign confidentiality papers and then started telling her about the Cruz character. She immediately thought, “wait a minute, this is a job interview, like I would have dressed up better for you. I mean, I’m wearing my target best, but still…”
Wore her “Target best” for the #cars3 interview. 😉 Would have dressed up had she known details. @cristela9 #cars3event

She followed up by saying that she is glad no one told her because she would have been very nervous. This way, she was able to be herself and landed the part.
Armie Hammer
Armie was fairly reserved through most of the interview. In fact, I saw him frequently playing with the diecast car figures in front of him. 😉 When he did pipe into the conversation or was answering a question, he was so funny. The very first question asked was how he was able to channel his inner jerk. His character is not one of the typical good guys. He is one of those younger, faster cars that is trying to take over for Lightning. And he’s got an attitude to boot.
Armie commented that, “it was fun” getting to act like a jerk, “but in like a safe environment, you know, where you’re not actually offending anybody. It’s good.”
How did @armiehammer channel his inner jerk in #Cars3? Said it was fun in a safe environment w/out offending anyone. #cars3event

“I wish I had a really good story. They called me and said do you want to be in the movie and I said, yup!” @armiehammer #cars3event

It was such a fantastic interview! They were all so fun and we had so many laughs!

I love interviews like this, where the talent is free to just be relaxed and have a conversation. Great read! 🙂
