Setting kids up with a phone

Kids nowadays use their smartphones a lot and at a younger age than ever before. Every parent will experience the moment that his or her kid wants a phone. It could be because all their classmates already have one or because you think it’s comforting to know that your son or daughter has a telephone with them. But how can you set them up for a phone in the best way?

What are the costs of a mobile phone?

First, it is wise to ask yourself some questions. Is the phone only meant to be used in emergency situations or is it also for your daughter or son to communicate with their friends? Based on this you can make the decision on how much phone credit your child needs. Another question you should ask yourself is if you want to give your child a prepaid phone or a phone with a subscription. With a prepaid phone you are in control of their expenses. Next to that you can easily top up their phone credit at Recharge.com.

When your kid owns a phone.

It’s very important that you explain to your child how a phone works. They need to know what they can and – more importantly – can’t do, such as making in-app purchases. The phone also has to be easy and not too difficult to understand for your son or daughter, so you can avoid unexpected (internet) costs. Depending on the age, it’s also smart to use parental control apps when they start using the phone. This will avoid that your kids visit sites you don’t want them to.

Securing the phone

It’s very smart to secure the phone, you can use a lock-screen password for example. This is to prevent someone from using your child’s phone without any permission.

Locating a lost phone

When your child is still very young, it is wise to install the Find my Phone app. Losing a phone can happen to everyone and with this app you can easily locate the lost cellphone. Next to that you can remove all data on the phone from a distance using Find My Phone. An easy way to prevent your personal data from getting into the wrong hands.

Overall it is very important that you stay up to date on how your son or daughter uses his or her phone. So you can intervene if necessary!
