It can be an ordeal trying to get from A to B with the whole family in one car. As much as we love them, kids can be an awful distraction and it’s difficult to concentrate while driving. All parents’ number one priority is to protect their family but it’s easy to let stress and tiredness get in the way. Here are some things to think about, in order to drive safely as possible with children in the car.
Be prepared
Explain to older children the dangers that certain behavior can cause. Make sure they understand why it’s not safe to distract you while you are driving and not to fight with their brothers and sisters. Try letting younger children bring a favorite toy each, particularly one that will keep them quiet. Don’t forget drinks and snacks for longer drives to keep them occupied and stop them complaining. It’s a good idea to attach toys to the car seat if you have babies and toddlers, so they can’t fall out. It can be very dangerous when one of you has to look for dropped toys from the front seat while the car is still moving.
Strap in
Make sure you kids are wearing seat belts at all times. If using a car seat make sure it is fitted properly and adjusted to the right size for the child. Do some research into different models. Another thing to be careful about in winter is when the children are wearing bulkier clothing. This can prevent the car seat from working properly as they aren’t as tightly secured. Keep loose objects secured as well so if you have shopping or luggage make sure these are stored in the trunk of your car. You could even tie them down with rope or netting.
The law is the law
I’m sure it’s necessary to remind you but you will need to drive according to the rules of the road. Don’t speed or run red lights. You don’t want to get into accidents because of this. If you do run into trouble you could consult injury lawyers. Anyway it’s advisable to always follow the traffic laws even though it’s frustrating as school zones are often congested and you are always in a rush. Try parking further away from the school and walking the rest of the way if it’s a problem.
Take breaks
Parenting is an exhausting job but this is the cause of many accidents so if you need to at any time pull over and take a break or a coffee.
Reduce distractions
Focus on the road at all times. It’s difficult when you have screaming kids in the back but if this occurs pull over before you let them grab your attention. Again, go through the rules with them and consider implementing a reward or punishment system according to their behavior, whatever usually works with your kids. Stay off your phone in the car, this is also a major cause of accidents.
