Fall Home Horrors (And How to Avoid Them)

Fall is here and if you want it to be the wonderful magical season that you always hope it will be complete with pumpkin spice lattes, cozy sweaters, crunchy leaves and tons of Halloween fun, rather than a real life nightmare with drafty chills, creepy crawlies and a home you can’t really rely on, then you are going to want to prep your place for the season, so you can sit back, relax, and really enjoy it to the fullest. Here are a few things that will help you with that.

The Draft That Wouldn’t Die

There’s nothing more haunting than a chill that sneaks under your door and across your toes. Drafts not only make your home uncomfortable, they also send your energy bills soaring. The fix? Check windows and doors for gaps, add weatherstripping, and consider thermal curtains. Of course, you can’t beat lots of cozy blankets and throws to relax under when all else fails too – it wouldn’t be autumn without them, right? By doing all this, you’ll save money and banish that ghostly breeze for good.

The Furnace Freak-Out

You finally settle into your blanket fort, mug in hand, and – bam – the heat cuts out. Don’t let your furnace pull a disappearing act on the coldest day of the year. Schedule a tune-up early in the season, swap out filters, and test it before you actually need it. Preventive care beats shivering in your slippers.

The Roof Leak Lurker

Fall rains can expose roof problems faster than you can say “where’s that drip coming from?” Loose shingles, clogged gutters, or damaged flashing can all lead to leaks. And once water gets in, mould and expensive repairs soon follow. Clear those gutters of leaves, inspect your roof, and patch up trouble spots before the downpours hit.

The Pest Parade

Here’s a truly chilling thought: while you’re craving cozy, so are the local critters. Mice, spiders, and even the occasional squirrel are all looking for warm hideaways, and your house is top of their list. This is where pest control comes in. Seal cracks, keep food sealed, and don’t ignore early warning signs (like suspicious scuttling in the walls). A quick call to professionals can save you from a full-blown invasion.

The Smoke Alarm Scare

Nothing screams “fall fail” like real smoke during your first fire of the season. Chimneys collect soot, and fireplaces can harbour blockages. Before you light up, have your chimney cleaned and test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. A safe, crackling fire is romantic; a smoke-filled living room, not so much.

Have a Fabulous Fall

Fall should be about comfort, not chaos. By tackling drafts, giving your furnace a check-up, clearing the gutters, keeping pests at bay, and prepping your fireplace, you’ll avoid the season’s most common home horrors. Think of it as your autumn exorcism, banishing the things that go bump (or drip, or squeak) in the night so you can focus on the good stuff.

So go ahead: light that candle, pour that cider, and curl up under your favourite blanket. Your home is safe, sound, and ready for everything autumn throws its way.
