Traveling to Missouri? Don’t overlook these exciting attractions. From the iconic Gateway Arch to the fascinating Titanic Museum, here are a few things to see and do that you’ll regret missing out on.
Gateway Arch
Towering 630-feet over St Louis, the Gateway Arch is Missouri’s most notable landmark. It was designed by architect Eero Saarinen as a monument to the pioneers that helped expand the United States westward, and is often regarded as the ‘gateway to the west’.
It’s possible to take a tram up the monument, where you can take in panoramic views of Gateway Arch and the Mississippi River. Make sure to also explore the museum where you can learn about the construction of the Gateway Arch and the history of the US expansion.
St Louis Zoo
Ranked among the best zoos in the US, St Louis Zoo is located in Forest Park and contains over 12,000 animals across 90 acres. It consists of several themed zones including a puffin & penguin walkthrough, impressive butterfly garden and an elephant river.
Entry to the zoo is free – although you will have to pay for parking. This makes it a great cheap day out (it’s a particularly great attraction to visit with kids). Visit in early Spring or Fall to avoid the crowds.
Ha Ha Tonka State Park
Located in the Lake of the Ozarks region, Ha Ha Tonka State Park is a haven for hikers and nature lovers. It features 15 miles of trails that include caves, sinkholes and natural bridges. You’ll also find a large spring here that discharges millions of gallons of water daily.
Perhaps its most unusual feature is the ruins of a European-style castle. This castle was completed in the 1920s and was the home of a local millionaire, but was destroyed by a fire in 1942. It overlooks the park and gives the entire location an enchanting fairytale feel.
Ozark National Scenic Riverways
Ozark National Scenic Riverways is located in southern Missouri and consists of pristine rivers and lush forests where you can engage in activities such as fishing and kayaking. It’s a popular hotspot for picnics in summer, and you’ll find various scenic hiking trails in the area including one leading to a large historic red mill.
Camping is very popular around Ozark National Scenic Riverways and there are many campgrounds nearby with peaceful surroundings. You’ll also find a few local RV parks.
Branson Titanic Museum
What is a Titanic Museum doing in Missouri? This museum located in a half-scale replica of the Titanic was put together by local historian, John Joslyn – who helped co-lead the expedition to the wreck of the Titanic in 1987.
Inside the museum, you will find various artefacts from the Titanic and various exhibits dedicated to the lives of the crew and passengers. It’s an educational and emotional attraction full of hands-on elements that kids will love. The museum is open all year round and could be particularly worthwhile visiting on a rainy day when exploring the Ozarks isn’t an option.
