Many of us dream of the perfect career, whether it be working as an airline pilot, a fashion designer, a school teacher, or something else completely. Many of us, for whatever reason, maybe because we’re a busy parent or older than 40, also look upon these career dreams as just that – dreams. This is so sad because, although not everyone will be a world-famous fashion designer or a household name in their field of expertise, many of us could and CAN make our career dreams a reality if only we believe in it and put in the effort to do so.
With that in mind, here are some tips to help you make your career dreams, whatever they may be, a reality.
Visualize your dream career
In order to go after your dream career, you first have to know what that looks like. So, when the kids are in bed and you have a few spare minutes, start dreaming. State thinking about all of the things you love and which career would most align with that. Think of what your dream day at work will go like and how you will feel when you’re doing it. This is the first step to chasing your dream.
Research your dream career
Next, you’re going to want to start researching your dream career. You will need to do this not only to determine if it really is the dream you think it is but also so you can work out what kinds of qualifications and experience you will need to get the role. For example, if you want to be a pilot you will probably need to start your career with an aviation degree, or if you want to be a web designer, you will need to learn as many of the most used coding languages as you can as a started. Most dream careers require some sort of skills or qualifications and the sooner you work out what they are, the sooner you will be working in your dream career.
Commit to it
Now for the hard bit; if you want to secure a dream role in your dream job, you need to commit to doing whatever you can, and whatever is necessary in order to do so. This means carving out time in an already packed schedule, working on your goals even when you don’t feel like it, and staying on the path even when things look impossible. People who give up very rarely get where they want to be, whereas people who are driven and keep on keeping on no matter what life throws at them are the ones who tend to succeed even if all the odds seem to be stacked against them.
Network
Networking with people who do the thing you want to do, or have the ability to hire you to do it, is the final step you need to take because, as unfair as it may be, it is often who you know rather than what you know who will help you to take that final step into your dream job.
Good luck!
