Most of us are aware that it’s just as important to prioritize our mental health as our physical health. The fact is though, many people still find it hard to discuss mental health. Luckily, this has been changing in the last few years. Gradually the stigma has been diminishing, and the more that we open up discussions about mental health, the more that this will continue. For those looking for a few simple ways to look after your mental health, read on.
Talk it out
Many people find it hard to discuss difficult feelings. The problem is that bottling up your emotions only makes the situation worse. You’ll only be able to hold in how you feel for so long, and dealing with problems alone can often take its toll. Many people are afraid to discuss their emotions with others for fear of being judged. Regardless, everyone experiences stressful times, and people will be able to relate more than you might believe. Those who feel more comfortable talking to an outsider should try therapy. Many people dislike the idea of therapy, seeing it as a drastic measure, but this is very far from the case. Talking out problems and goals with an unbiased professional can be excellent for personal development.
Keep a clear head
Our society has a rather problematic issue of seeking short-term escapism from our problems. Many people turn to alcohol or other drugs to find a sense of relief. For some of us, drinking in moderation will never become a problem, yet so many others will find themselves suffering addictions. Keeping a clear head when feeling low is much more productive in the long run than using substances to seek a temporary fixes. Try exercise, try healthy eating, try taking up a creative hobby. If you or anyone you know are suffering with such problems, there are plenty of substance abuse treatment programs out there to offer support.
Start a gratitude journal
Often, once we start to feel low, it’s difficult to apprepricate the positive things in our lives. Fixating on a problem leads to ongoing negative thinking and an inability to see the good. Start a gratitude journal and write down all the things in your life that you are grateful for. Look back upon these things when you are struggling to see the light. Write in this journal each day, even if it’s only a few lines. You could write about something positive you achieved that day, a goal that you have, or a good memory. In time, this practice will allow you to achieve a sense of calm and happiness. Positive thinking is a habit that needs to be worked on and doesn’t happen overnight.
Get active
When you’re busy with work and family life, exercise can seem hard to fit in. If you’re feeling down, getting those endorphins pumping can really give your mind the boost that it needs. Try to make some time to exercise, even a small amount per day is worth it. If it means getting up just fifteen minutes earlier to practice a quick yoga video on Youtube-then so be it! Once you get into a good routine, you’ll soon notice the difference.
