6 Ways to Keep Your Bedroom Furniture Looking Like New
Bedroom is the heart of your home—it’s where you retire to at the end of a long day. It’s your very own private space. Of course, you’d put lots of thoughts into setting it up just the way you like. No wonder, you’d want to incorporate some of your favorite pieces of furniture in your bedroom décor—perhaps that hand-carved bed-side table you lugged back from your trip to China, or that antique nightstand you bought at a yard sale that looks nothing like cheap. But it may be difficult to keep your bedroom furniture safe from the ravages of daily life. Don’t worry, I have some simple yet effective tips that will help you keep your bedroom furniture in top shape for a long time.
- Hide the Scratches
If you have furry friends at home like I do, scratches on your favorite furniture is a painful reality. After years of spending on furniture repairing services, I came to know of this nifty little trick that you’ll be surprised to learn. Walnuts—yes, walnuts! Here’s how you do it: Rub a walnut over the scratches. You’ll find it leaves a thin oily film on the surface. Let it dry and then, wipe off with a cloth. I’ve found this to work best for light-coloured woods; for dark shades, coffee grounds are great. Simply take a cotton swab, dip it in moist coffee grounds and apply it over the scratches. Wait for 10-15 minutes and clean off with a dry cloth.
- Make Cleaning a Regular Ritual
Cleaning should be a ritual that you must perform every day. I know this is common sense, but there are so many of us, including me, who clean up only when there’s a dire need. I’m working on this and you should too.
While a regular routine of dusting is good maintenance, you should use a cleaning agent on your furniture once a week. You can use a store-bought furniture cleaner or a homemade one like I often do. To make this, mix equal parts of alcohol, gum turpentine, olive oil and strained juice of lemon and use the solution to clean grimy furniture to get their shine back.
- Refill Cracked Varnish
Before you decide giving up that dresser you’ve cherished for years, give it a second thought. If the varnish on your bedroom furniture has cracked or damaged, you can bring back the luster with the help of a clear nail polish. Apply a generous coat of clear nail polish over the damaged area and let it dry for about half an hour. Then use a fine sandpaper to level the surface until it gives out a sheen. That’s it!
- Paint for Perfection
Some items of old furniture tend to look boring and out of style if you don’t revamp their color and style. Consider painting your old furniture in a shade that’s en vogue. I recently tried this out on a piece of bedroom furniture from Sydney. Trust me, this one step can alone breathe life back into your bedroom.
- Change the Slipcovers
Do you have a couch in your bedroom? If yes, you can give it a new lease of life by simply changing the slipcovers. They are easy to remove and wash. Plus, you can always keep rotating between 2-3 different styles in keeping with the rest of your décor. What a money-saver!
- Restore Paint with Coconut Oil
You can easily restore old and dying furniture with some coconut oil. Repainting might cost you considerably. An easy and cost-effective alternative is to make your furniture look like new. You can do so by dabbing a soft cloth in coconut oil and rubbing it into the wooden surface in circular motions. The colour of the wood will come out and the layer of oil will protect the wood as well.
If you’re inspired to refresh your bedroom further beyond just maintenance, consider exploring a huge selection of double beds that can complement your existing furniture and decor. Adding a new bed can be a central part of your bedroom’s transformation, giving it a fresh look while you keep your existing pieces looking like new. Whether you’re looking for modern designs or classic styles, finding the right bed can elevate your bedroom’s aesthetic and functionality, making your private space even more welcoming and comfortable.
Over time, your bedroom furniture will start looking dull. But with a little care and the tips I’ve shared above, you can keep them looking like new for long.
