National Fire Prevention Week
Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, the tragic 1871 conflagration that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres. The fire began on October 8, but continued into and did most of its damage on October 9, 1871.
This year, National Fire Prevention Week starts Oct. 5 and the theme is Smoke Alarms Save Lives: Test Yours Every Month. In honor of this, we paid a visit to the Van Nuys Air Tanker Base and got some hands on training. Do you know how to use a fire extinguisher?
The first responders at the base were great. They not only gave us the above training but they also allowed us to tour a few of the fire helicopters and planes on the base. If you have watched Planes: Fire & Rescue, you may even recognize them.
I’ve always been impressed with the research that goes into making these animated movies. I was able to chat with the creators of both the first Planes and now Planes: Fire & Rescue. There is so much that goes on behind the scenes to make these movies not only fun to watch but technically accurate as well. In making the movie, the creators actually went to the Van Nuys Air Tanker Base and toured the helicopters and planes as well as talked with the staff.
They wanted this movie to be accurate and did their research until it was. To those of us that are not already versed in firefighter language, we may not know the difference. But for those that are in the field, they can truly appreciate just how technically accurate this movie is. I love that!
I applaud all first responders for the work they do. It is truly amazing how this base operates. Even with how large Los Angeles is, they can have an aircraft up in the air and on site in only 7 minutes. That makes a huge difference in containing and putting out the fire.
