When we road tripped to Arkansas this past spring to attend a blog conference. We made a few stops on our way home to make the trip a bit more interesting. We first toured the Fantastic Caverns in Springfield, MO. Then we stopped in Springfield, IL to visit the Home of Abraham Lincoln and The Lincoln Tomb.
I remember visiting Springfield, IL when I was a kid and really wanted my kids to experience it as well. Especially since President Lincoln is our oldest daughter’s favorite president. What a great way to learn history!
Home of Abraham Lincoln
The Home of Abraham Lincoln is open to the public and free. You just grab your tickets at the Visitor’s Center. With the tickets, you’ll get a scheduled tour and a tour guide to take you through the actual home. You can also wander up and down the street and visit the Lincoln family’s neighborhood.
It’s just such an incredible thing to be able to see the actual house that the Lincoln family lived in. The tour guides are so knowledgeable too that you get a complete history on the boys, Martha and Abe. What they liked, what room in their house they enjoyed the most, the way they used the kitchen and even the outdoor privy. You’re walking in the same place President Lincoln did.
Most activities, now-a-days, are not free so finding something that the kids will like that doesn’t cost anything is HUGE. Plus you squeeze in a history lesson without your kids even realizing it. 😉
This summer, if you are traveling anywhere near Springfield, MO, make sure you take in the Lincoln Home and Tomb. The Tomb is located very close to the home so you can do both on the same day.
Take a look at some of the pictures we grabbed while on our tour:
